My family and I have been vacationing in the Adirondacks since I was a child; in particular the Lake George region which is rich in history pertaining to the French and Indian War, as well as the American Revolution. Whether it be the monuments dedicated to the men who fought, or the historical sites of Fort Ticonderoga and Fort William Henry – one can almost feel, see, and hear the past while at Lake George. Conflict is inspired by my time vacationing there, and my fond interest in the founding of America. The opening of this work begins with a simple rhythmic theme at a slow tempo representing the formation of each army as it prepares for battle. As this theme gradually increases in tempo it reaches an apex with an intense array of call and answer between each part of this trio as the battle begins. This work is intended for the intermediate to advanced student, and there is an optional repeat that begins at Measure 28 and ends at Measure 60. The instrumentation for Conflict is as follows: Snare Drum and Suspended Cymbal, 4-Concert Toms and Suspended Cymbal, and 4-Timpani tuned to G,B,D,G.
Conflict
In 2012 HaMaR Percussion, who gave me my first opportunity by publishing three of my books, asked me to create a series of Percussion Ensemble works for the elementary to intermediate student. The works below are intended to introduce this student to performing chamber music with other percussionists. Moreover, being that these works do not exceed four players, they are also intended for students to learn how to perform without a conductor.
